AI vs Human Design: a look at modern AI Website Builders — and why they can’t replace us

July 12

Scroll

AI can now build websites: fast, cheap, and... pretty decent. But does that mean designers are done for? In this article, we explore the most current AI platforms that generate entire websites from a simple prompt. We’ll walk through what each tool can (and can’t) do — and most importantly, why even the smartest AI can’t replace the thoughtful, strategic, and human-centered design approach that a creative studio brings.

While AI is redefining how we build online experiences, not all tools are created equal. Some promise lightning-fast results, others offer code export, and a few even mimic full-stack development. Before we get into the nuances of why human-crafted design still matters,

let’s take a closer look at the current AI platforms that claim to build websites from a simple text prompt — and what they actually deliver.

AI Platforms that generate websites from a simple text promp

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has made website creation dramatically easier, enabling fully functional web apps — including design and code — to be generated from a simple text prompt. Platforms like Lovable.dev and Vercel v0, for example, can turn natural language into complete web applications. Below is an overview of modern tools that offer similar “ready-to-launch” website generation experiences.

  1. Lovable (lovable.dev)

What it does: Lovable is an AI-powered tool for developers that generates full-stack web applications—including frontend, backend, and database—from a single prompt. You describe your requirements in plain English, and Lovable delivers a working site or app. It features an integrated IDE with collaborative editing and one-click deployment.

  • Generation model: GPT‑4-based LLMs transform text into code.

  • Post-generation editing: Yes—edit both UI and code directly in the browser.

  • Pricing: Free starter plan; team plans available.

  • Pros: Turnkey full-stack applications, native deploy support (e.g., Vercel).

  • Cons: Still new; requires learning prompt structure.

  1. Vercel v0 (v0.dev)

What it does: Vercel v0 is a chat-based assistant from Vercel that generates UI and code in real time. Using a conversational interface (“Ask v0”), you can build pages, forms, or full sites. It’s called “Design Mode.”

  • Generation model: Proprietary AI models (v0-1.5-md/lg, GPT‑4o variations).

  • Post-generation editing: Yes—refine design interactively or tweak code.

  • Pricing: Free ($5 credits/month); Premium $20/mo for higher limits and model access; team plans extra.

  • Pros: Seamless Vercel integration, export to Next.js, intuitive chat interface.

  • Cons: Token-based billing, limited free tier.

  1. TeleportHQ (teleporthq.io)

What it does: TeleportHQ is an AI-powered site builder based on ChatGPT. Enter your site description, and it instantly generates layouts, content blocks, and text. Then, you can customize the design via drag-and-drop and export to HTML/CSS/JS or React/Vue.

  • Generation model: OpenAI’s ChatGPT (GPT‑3.5/GPT‑4).

  • Post-generation editing: Yes—visual editor and optional Figma import.

  • Pricing: Free (1 project/3 pages + basic AI); Pro $9–18/mo; agency/enterprise plans also available.

  • Pros: Visual builder with code export, initial free availability, templates included.

  • Cons: Project/page limits on free plan.

  1. Dorik AI (dorik.com)

What it does: Dorik AI is a no-code AI website builder. Describe your needs (“landing page for a coastal resort”) and it returns a design with content and images. You can then tweak it using the built-in editor.

  • Generation model: Proprietary (likely text + image generation mix).

  • Post-generation editing: Yes—full WYSIWYG editor with section re-generation.

  • Pricing: Free (beta); paid plans from $13/mo (multi-site).

  • Pros: Simple, fast, no-code.

  • Cons: Beta stage, limited complexity and e-commerce features.

  1. Hostinger AI Website Builder

What it does: Built into Hostinger’s hosting platform. Users answer a few questions about their business, and the AI builds a completed site with sections, images, and text. Then it’s editable in a drag-and-drop UI.

  • Generation model: Likely GPT‑4 or proprietary LLM.

  • Post-generation editing: Yes—standard site-builder editing tools.

  • Pricing: After a 7-day trial, plans start at $3.79/mo (includes hosting, domain, SSL).

  • Pros: All-in-one solution; hosting and SEO features included.

  • Cons: Tied to Hostinger’s ecosystem; limited advanced customization.

  1. Durable.ai

What it does: Durable.ai is marketed as the “fastest AI website builder for small businesses.” Creates a fully responsive landing page in 30 seconds, complete with SEO, blogging, CRM, and analytics.

  • Generation model: Likely GPT-based with template-driven design.

  • Post-generation editing: Yes—simple editor for text, color, blocks.

  • Pricing: Free trial; Starter $15/mo ($12 if annual); Business $25/mo ($20 if annual).

  • Pros: Rapid site creation with marketing and SEO integration.

  • Cons: Limited customization; template-centric and one-size-fits-most approach.

  1. Codia AI (codia.ai)

What it does: Codia AI is a professional-grade tool for converting text or Figma designs into production-ready code. It supports “Prompt-to-UI” and “Design-to-Code,” with multi-framework compatibility (React, Vue, Flutter, etc.)

  • Generation model: Combines computer vision and LLMs; claims 99% design-to-code accuracy.

  • Post-generation editing: Yes—work in Figma plugin, tweak UI, re-generate code.

  • Pricing: Free trial; tiered paid subscriptions and enterprise licenses.

  • Pros: Clean, production-quality code; broad framework support.

  • Cons: Technical/user developer–oriented; some manual polish often needed.

Key takeaways

AI website builders can drastically speed up web projects. But each tool fits a niche:

  • Lovable, v0, TeleportHQ → developer/startup tools with full-stack capabilities.

  • Dorik, CodeDesign, Hostinger, Durable → no-code solutions tailored to marketers and small businesses.

  • Codia → high-fidelity design-to-code converter ideal for UI/UX teams.

They all offer time-saving and accessibility benefits—but come with limitations like freemium caps, limited customizability compared to bespoke design, and the need for manual adjustments. Choose based on whether you need a full-stack code solution (Lovable/Codia), a fast no-code launch (Dorik/Hostinger), or a flexible IDE-style app (v0/TeleportHQ).

Why these AI tools still can’t replace studio-crafted design

  • AI doesn’t understand your business. It can generate a visually pleasing page, but it won’t grasp your brand’s deeper values, target audience behaviors, or long-term vision.

  • Without strategy, it’s just a site. We design holistic user journeys—not just pretty interfaces—that guide users to desired actions.

  • AI is templated; humans are intentional. These tools give a decent starting point, but the real design magic is in the thoughtful, custom iteration that follows.

  • We account for nuance. Accessibility, color psychology, UX patterns, emotion-driven microcopy—subtleties AI still struggles to handle.

Final thoughts

AI platforms are incredible tools for quick experiments, MVPs, and small business launches. They save time, spark ideas, and can even impress. But when it’s time to build something strategic, branded, and beautiful — that’s where the human element becomes irreplaceable.

At Tvorba Design Studio, we design with intention, intuition, and impact.
No robot can do that (yet).
